By coating the ice-covered Great Lakes with black powder or liquid, scientists at Armour Research Foundation hope to open them to shipping weeks earlier each year. The black "paint" increases the absorption of the suns's heat. Still being sought is a cheap material that will accomplish this without causing water pollution.
