(1195) Fixing the black dye in clothing.

Manufacturer and builder 2, 1875

Q
We extract the essence from a long letter of a lady correspondent: I have often been troubled with the black dye from dresses, stockings, gloves, etc. coming off, dirtying the white linen, the hands, etc., and not only this, but the black comes off in washing with soap. If you can give a remedy to correct this, you will greatly oblige.

A chemist in Stutgard, Germany, named Lauber, published some time ago the following remedy: Boil in a kettle as much water as it is required to treat a dress, and dissolve in it 1½ ouces bichromate of potash, 2ƒ ounces common malt, and 2 ounces washing soda. Leave the dress for five minute, in this bath, stir it around often with a stick, then wring it, and wash in water.
