Phosphorescent Paint Patented.

Manufacturer and builder 9, 1879

It is reported that quite recently a patent has been secured in England for the use of phosphorescent salts, such as sulphid of lime, of strontium, of barium, etc., for the purpose of illumination by mixing them with paint or varnish for wall papers, coating house fronts to make them luminous at night, etc., as was suggested by us on page 67 of our March number for 1878. At present the patentee only covers clock faces to make them visible at night, but by his new patent he claims it for all kinds of lighting purposes - streets, ships, buoys, and also objects in the signal service. Our readers must know that this class of substances possesses the very curious and interesting property of storing up light from the sun or electrical discharges, and gradually radiating it out when it is dark.
