There are two methods of transferring to glass; one is to print on paper and transfer to glass as already described in a previous number. This method is employed also in potteries to put the figures on The earthenware; but in this case the printing is done with an ink made from a fireproof mineral substance, the paper pasted face down on the material, while the subsequent baking destroys the paper and leaves the mineral. Glass may be treated in the same way, only the lines will often be less sharp, because by the baking in of the transferred picture the heat will soften the glass and so destroy the sharpness of the lines. Therefore usually the transferred picture is simply protected by varnish, Or a second piece of glass plate is placed against the side containing the picture.
