(2553) Yellow N.

Manufacturer and builder 1, 1880

— This new color, introduced by a French house, is not a paint at all, but a dyestuff. It is no more intense than picric acid, but has a different shade — more like curcuma and quercitron. We do not think it is fit to be used as a paint, but is used on wool in the same manner as oranges and oceanilline. Very little sulphuric acid must be used in the beck, as an excess of it will precipitate the coloring matter. The best method for dyeing on cotton is to mordant with stennate of soda, pass through an alum bath, rinse, and then dye at 60° C. A little acetic acid, or acetate of alumina, is added to the bath.
