The Manufacturer and Builder 6, 1876
It is all in the lacquer. Any kind of brass may be given a more or less intense gold color by a lacquer make of shellac and alcohol, and colored with either turmeric, gamboge, red sandalwood, saffron, or dragon's blood. The lacquer we use for philosophical instru-ments is made of 1 pint alcohol, 3 ounces shellac, 1 ounce turmeric, and 4 ounce dragon's blood; digest for a week, decant, and filter. The objects have to be moderately heated, and the lacquer put on with a very fine flat brush.
